Day 3 Guilin

After breakfast we fly to Guilin and indulge ourselves in China’s most amazing natural landscapes. Guilin is celebrated for its picturesque karst limestone pinnacles and meandering Li River. An old Chinese saying describes Guilin’s landscape as “the best scenery under heaven.” Its misty limestone peaks “rise as suddenly from the earth as trees in a forest, and surrounding the city like mountains floating in an imaginary sea.” Meet our local representative and transfer to our hotel in the heart of the city. In the afternoon, we visit the Fubo Hill for a bird-eye view of Guilin. Guilin Sheraton Hotel (B.L,D)

Day 4 Long Sheng

This part of the country encompasses China’s most famous scenic landscapes. Before discovering the best treasures Guilin has to offer, we start an off-the-beaten-path hiking tour to Long Sheng’s spectacular Dragon Spine Rice Terraces.

Over the centuries, the Zhuang and Yi minorities have sculpted 2,000 feet peaks with remarkable step-like terraces for growing rice in the hilly areas of Southwest China. This transformation over time has created landscapes of utility as well as immense beauty. In Spring, when the terraces are full of water, they resemble irregular silver ladders; and in autumn, when the rice ripens, the mountains turn into golden waves. Visit the unique culture of local minorities and their villages where life has remained unchanged for thousands of years! we are able to hike between the villages following tiny stone paths carved out by the local people. This memorable journey is rarely included in the conventional itinerary. (B,L,D)

Day 5 Ziyuan

After breakfast we travel by motor coach (2 hours) to Ziyuan to view the unique Chinese Danxia formation.

China Danxia is the name given in China to landscapes developed on continental red terrigenous sedimentary beds influenced by endogenous forces (including uplift) and exogenous forces (including weathering and erosion). The inscribed site comprises six areas found in the sub-tropical zone of south-west China. They are characterized by spectacular red cliffs and a range of erosional landforms, including dramatic natural pillars, towers, ravines, valleys and waterfalls. These rugged landscapes have helped to conserve sub-tropical broad- leaved evergreen forests, and host many species of flora and fauna, about 400 of which are considered rare or threatened.

Ziyuan County is situated in northeastern Guangxi, about 67 miles north of Guilin, where you’ll find a range of mountains and peaks, crisscross of creeks and valleys, thick forests, fresh air, and in addition to the Han, 12 ethnic groups including the Miao, the Yao and the Zhuang. It lies in the climate zone characterized by subtropical monsoon and humidity. Though with dampness and comparatively excessive rainfall all the year round, its climate is warm and agreeable all four seasons of a year.

Affected by the climate, vegetation, geology and geomorphology that are peculiar here, the natural resources of tourism in Ziyuan are multi-level and of many types. Here we’ll enjoy the uniqueness of mountains or paddle a light boat along a blue creek. In a word, the scenery here is quite different from the scenery in the other parts within the big circle of tourism in Great Guilin. The place that deserves particular mention is the Bajiaozhai National Forest Park. It is a park with many wonderful scenic spots, characteristic of Danxia landform, and the shapes and images we find here are very peculiar. The park covers an area of more than 800 square kilometres and is a choice place for you to enjoy hundreds of viewable scenes, drift along a creek, venture into the unknown, search for beautiful scenery, and spend a summer holiday.

Now the scenic spots that are available include “drifting along the Zijiang River,” “the waterfall at Baoding,” “the (IM) scenes characteristic of Danxi landform at Bajiaozhai,” “the national forest tourism park,” “the Baihuigu ecological park,” “exploration by drifting along the Wupai River,” “ethnic custonms of the Miao and the Yao,” “the Mid-July River-Lamp Song Festival,” etc. As to those under development, they include “the hot spring at Chetianwan,” “the snowy scene at Ziyuan,” “the Huaguoshan Park,” “the path taken by the Red Army at Laoshanjie on the Long March,” “the natural ecological tourism district at the Yinzhulao Mountain,” “prairies on the plateau,” and “ancient cultural relics.” The unique and fantastic scenery in Ziyuan has been eulogized by specialists in geology, gardening and tourism as “the viewable state garden of great interests” and a bright pearl in the big circle of tourism in Great Guilin. Return to Guilin in the evening. (B,L,D)

Day 6 Li River Cruise – Yangshuo

A beautiful day waits! You take a scenic motor coach ride through the countryside, past lush green fields and rice paddies. Arrive at a local village and embark on a memorable Li River cruise. The 52-mile trip has countless twists and turns. The scenery is reminiscent of classical Chinese landscapes – bamboo groves, sleepy villages, fishermen on bamboo rafts, cormorants, water buffalo, soaring karst pinnacles and mist shrouded peaks… our cruise concludes at the famed Yangshuo, a small town, amidst a haunting and surreal setting.

Upon arrival, check into our hotel and enjoy a free afternoon to explore this fascinating town on your own or join M&M staff for a guided walk. You may rent a tuk-tuk to visit local farmers’ fields and homes, or take a bicycle to the Moon Hill. Yangshuo’slandscape of limestone hills, rice fields and lazy rivers is the very image of rural China. Taking a bike through this much-painted landscape provides a great way to experience the dramatic countryside, ancient villages and bustling local markets in a very personal way. Tonight, you may attend an optional singing & lighting show “Liu Sa Jie” which was directed by Zhang Yimou who also choreographed the opening ceremony of 2008 Beijing Olympics. Yangshuo Sovereign Hotel, River view room (B,L)

Day 7 Yangshuo – Xingping

After breakfast, we take a scenic drive (40 minutes) to Xingping, where we’ll see the most fascinating scenery along the Li River. We board a private boat to go back and forth on the Li River to shoot sunrise and sunset. (B,L,D)

Day 8 Yangshuo – Pocket Mountain

After breakfast, we’ll shoot the beautiful scenery along the Yulong River on a bamboo draft. Later we travel by motor coach to the Pocket Mountain to shoot the scenery along Li River from the top of the mountains. (B,L,D)

Day 9 Yangshuo – Beijing

In the morning you are free to explore Yangshuo on your own. Later transferred to the airport for a flight to Beijing. Upon arrival meet and transfer to our hotel. Marriott Beijing City Wall (B,L)

Day 10 Fly home

In the morning, you are free to pack, to rest, or to do some last minute shooting. Then transfer to the airport for your return flight to the U.S. arriving in SFO later today. (B)
